Why I Chose to Become a Dentist, and Not a Doctor

I am listening to Defying Gravity from the Wicked musical.

I have always wanted to try to defy gravity, break the mold and the stereotype and i know joining a very renowned program doesn't look like it. Well, here i am doing that, defying gravity. And how exactly you may ask. And this is how; People in Pakistan rarely look at dentist as a profession when they choose pre medical subjects. All everyone dreams of is being a doctor and not a dentist. So yeah, i think it pretty much is the only reason how i defy gravity. But i think i can bring more to my life than just studies ;) And I admit, a few months ago, i was amongst those people who had no idea that you can be a dentist too :P I have seen The hangover, and have you seen how the guy lashes out at his friend when he calls himself a doctor to the receptionist, but the dear friend reminds him he's a dentist AND NOT A DOCTOR! I think i will face situations like these too, so it'll be better to call myself a dentist. Still, people call me a doctor, and i have to correct them by telling "A Dentist, not a Doctor" !

All i ever wanted was to write and explore my options. And i was getting the chance to do that, until i got the call letter i was hoping I'd never get. And it changed everything. Now i shall spend the next four years living a monotonous life and studying teeth instead of interning at that magazine i like or reading books and taking pictures and traveling. Well, come to think of it, my best friend should really get a dentist's check up :P

So here are 5 reasons why i chose to become a dentist, and not a doctor.

1. Less Working Hours

Living amongst hundreds of doctors i have seen that there is no specific time when they would be called to the clinic or the hospital for an emergency, but when i look at the dentists, their lives are much better than that. All they have to do is sit in a chair and JUST look at teeth. And they have no emergency calls, all they have are the 8 working hours :P So it would give me plenty of time to follow my passion of writing and youth journalism :D (but only after i am done with the rigorous four years study)

2. You Don't Need a Specialization, Necessarily :P

Yeah, and you can directly start a clinic afterwards and treat people. Though you will not get to do all the fun and exciting and expensiver treatments but you can still work. If you wanna settle in life early, i think it's good for you, only if you want a medical career. Well, you can do specialization, nobody's stopping you, but look at the doctors. They have to study for their WHOLE lives, and yet it's not enough to pass the specialization exams. Sure, if you want more, it's the best. But I'm saying just in case you're lazy like me ;)

3. Easy Money, Than a Doctor

Come on! I know doctors earn a lot, but have you ever checked out their lives, that by how much working hours they go through for all the money they get?? A dentist has to work way way lesser than that and earn the same, maybe even more ;) So from the whole financial point of view, doctors are being paid less than the dentists (hey, that's one way of putting it, right :D )

4. Time for Yourself and Family

Has anybody seen "When a Stranger Calls" ? The parents of the kids who Camilla Belle goes to baby sit are doctors, and boy! Their house is AMAZING! And if you're being inspired to become a doctor after watching that, then also remember that they left their children ALONE WITH A TEENAGE GIRL TO LOOK OVER THEM, How insane is that? Teenagers can't take care of themselves, how will they manage babies. Thus, i don't want this happening to my kids ;) What i mean is that i just want time for my babies and see them grow up not on video calls through my phone, but in real. Moreover, as i said earlier, less working hours give me time to travel and see the world by the money i earn ;)

5. A Year Less of Studies

I don't know how it works in other countries but i sure know that here in Pakistan we have five years for a basic doctor degree after which you are nothing without spending four years specializing, only if you pass the exam :P Whereas there's this other four year basic dental degree after which you can actually work and earn more than that specialization-less doctor kid who gives no respect to a dentist. But don't blame me if he does his specialization and starts earning more than you. A dentist must also do his specialization, otherwise there's no chance of improvement.

So if you can agree to spend the rest of your life treating crying kids who will bite your hands and foul smelling mouths, then you should definitely become a dentist :D

P.S. I do not have anything against doctors, and there is nothing wrong with being a doctor, these are just some factors that inclined me towards becoming a dentist :)
