The Writer in Fashion

With Celine's new campaign featuring Joan Didion, it became evident that writers and authors will always be an influence on the masses, and they have the power to stir things up whenever they want. Buzz Bissinger once wrote a piece for GQ Magazine where he told the world about his addiction to designer leather, and how Gucci even invited him over to show him around, and it was only because he had spent so much money on them. Writers, one way or another, have a hand in the fashion world through their own influences. They're also celebrities, and they're also the ones with money, and with fashion, money matters.

But what I wanna talk about is how the writer is influencing the fashion world. Last summer, when Burberry showed their S/S 2015 collection, Christopher Bailey dedicated the collection to the author and travel writer Bruce Chatwin. The collection featured prominent typography on the accessories, and carried itself with an air of an artist. Writing, of course, is a form of art. And fashion being an art itself, needs to be able to walk along with the other forms it oh so cannot be escape the influence of.

Similarly, the Dior Hommes S/S'15 collection also featured prints from a long lost letter by Dior that read “Traditions have to be maintained so they can be passed on to future generations. In troubled times like ours, we must maintain these traditions which are our luxury and the flower of our civilisation.”

It comes to mind that the best way to preserve history, traditions and influences is to write them down. And this is where the writers come in. They pen down the traditions of the human hearts. We all want to relate, and with having writers like Bissinger and Didion, who are notorious as self obsessed and narcissists, it makes sense to have them on board. Because no matter how deep fashion and art is, it is also perceived as superficial. And these writers represent both sides of it.

In the end, no matter what, it all comes down to connections. Yes, some things are so instagram perfect, tumblr worthy and tweet favored, but there lies a deeper meaning to it all. The desire to connect.

And when fashion and writers connect, the connection runs deeper, stronger, and longer than anyone can even imagine.

It gives goosebumps.
