LCM: Collections That Made Statements

London Collections Men (LCM) recently ended and sticking to their roots, the Brits showed a great amount of suits and coats, but it wasn't the monotony of the silhouette that interests me, I have always gone for more challenging collection, collections that mean something and can be called art. Of course, Burberry was beautiful, and one cannot deny that it was an amazing collection. But what I'm interested in is how designers redefine norms through their collection, and help us see the world we can relate to. The following collections did that for me.

Katie Eary

Katy is the true embodiment of what her collections are, even her hair is colored like that! But giving a psychedelic twist to My Little Pony and churning out prints that redefine childhood, by being on drugs is something only Katy can invoke. I think it is the essence of free spirit and adventure, that Katy continues as a theme in her collections where it is all about rebelling and finding the crazy in you. I think with this collection, the innocent viewpoint of the childhood being plagued by the things one discovers in adulthood is what is on display. Sure, the collection is playful and colorful, but the message about the opening of the eyes to the world at a very young age. How that plays, one can only imagine. Which the collection did. While it perverted the idea of the innocence of youth, Katie is right, there is nothing innocent about the innocence of youth

Loved the ombre effect though. The button up shirts were just beautiful.

Sibling

Their show was about redefining stereotypes and breaking the image of the all-so-manly jock that prevails in our society. Sending down a muscular model who looks like a jock in sequined jerseys along with cheerleaders donning the same sequined tank tops, it was a ode to changing times, and changing perceptions. That it is ok to be who you want to be, and being yourself cannot stop you from being a jock, as it is supposed to be a place only the macho men go to in their lives. Times have changed, and now, everyone is welcome. Or maybe it's about the mockery of the Jock culture as Lou Stoppard put it beautifully

"It’s said that fashion is full of people who were bullied at school, so maybe that’s why the chance to gawp, giggle and leer at the jocks (albeit while admiring some fine fashion)..."

 Christopher Shannon

Shannon's clothes represented an age where the kids are all high because their lives are not perfect so they are out getting as crazy as possible, and as one outfit suggested "damaged." But it's ok because partying and being crazy can take the pain away.

In an age where we are constantly bombarded with the best part of everyone's lives through carefully curated social media profiles,, it is easy to feel depressed and feel like one's hanging on to the rope for nothing. So it just feels more natural to let go of the things holding one back and have a plain old good time just dancing the worries away. With all those dark tones dominating the collection, there were accents of color in logos or shorts or small things that indicated a piece of sanity somewhere, that there is light at the end of the tunnel and all of this time is just to get to the place where the light dominates the the lives of the models Shannon sent down the runway.

Kit Neale

Sometimes, life is about letting lose in the happiness of the moments you're living in, and when that happens, you want colorful things around you because somehow, a plethora of colors will always be associated with happiness. Kit Neale's collection was all about lose silhouettes in colorful mix-and-match prints and patterns with DIY accessories. For me, this collection implied taking life as it is and making do with whatever one has. Because if you want more, life becomes a mess going in search for that more and it's ok to be a mix of all the things you have right now because life isn't perfect and it will never be. So make hay while the sun shines, and let your paintings out to dry because you are a work of art that shouldn't be held back from the world.
