The Disappointing Menswear at Fashion Pakistan Week

When it was Fashion Pakistan Week A/W 2014-15, I was excited for the fact that menswear was coming back and a lot of designers showed menswear. But I don't know why and where things went wrong that the menswear shown at this year's Fashion Pakistan Week seemed to come across anything but tasteful.

The second day was the day when the first and the second menswear designers showcased. And it was weird. Seriously.

As much as the press is raving about Amir Adnan, I don't think FPW was the right platform to showcase his highly regal collection of great eastern wear and ill fitted western wear. Primarily a designer that thrives on his groomswear, Amir Adnan's work made sense, but for the most part, it just didn't fit in. The glitter, the glitz, the extremely gorgeous sherwanis were really out of place. With a pret fashion week, you cannot just delve into your own territories. Fashion weeks are supposed to be about pushing boundaries and coming out of one's comfort zones. Specially pret fashion weeks. Had we wanted some taste of shadi season, we have bridal couture weeks for that. Amir Adnan's collection was beautiful, no doubt, and the tie on the look sported by Hasnain Lehri was billboard of the craft Amir Adnan's work displays, but it was just not the right time for it.

Speaking of innovation and breaking barriers, Abdul Samad did just that with his collection. High on creativity , the collection was clearly inspired by the intention of being high on something else too. And when one gives out hints to how the creative process goes like that, the collection comes out looking like a mess. I felt like the collection had potential though. A look or two from the black and white segment were good, and the jackets on some of the models really stood out for the beautiful use of pastel colors, but the poor styling of the sherwani aside, the bandh gala jacket and the purple sherwani were clearly the best things to come out on the ramp, and not Shehzad Roy, who wore another great look, i just wish the pants had been more fitted.

But fitting on the part of HSY was just perfect. HSY knows menswear and he knows what sells. He's an amazing menswear designer and an entrepreneur. With prints of plaid, checks, stripes and all the usual menswear favorites taking over the collection, I felt that the styling and the accessories hurt the showcase a lot. It was a strong collection turned weak by the use of the wrong ties. I just wish he'd keep his safe work for the stores and show us the creative genius that he is more.

I know I expect too much and our menswear industry is in the Baby Steps Phase but when i see so much happening with womenswear, I just feel bad about what us men will do. Three menswear designers in 4 days out of the 30 shows, it's just humuliatingly sad. That's not even one menswear designer per day!

Khair, that's it for me. End of rant.

Until PSFW.
