All Night

Phillip Lim

You know how in music they talk about hitting the lights, dancing all night and forgetting the worries?

The sun sets down. The sky is sparkling. And you get all dressed up to go to the club. The club where you’ll get drunk, dance your ass off, rub sweaty bodies with strangers, making all that getting ready to go to waste. The club where the ceiling is sparkling, and so is the ground – the dance floor. You can do this all night. Feels like paradise. And in that moment, you just get lost. You forget your worries. Your abusive boyfriend, your failed semester, your empty wallet, your horrible boss, your bitchy coworkers, your annoying parents. It’s like you can turn all the wrongs right.

Yes, you could do this all night.

And when the real sparkle is over, the stars go to sleep, the sun rises, and the light hits your eyes, you’re back in that world you were trying to escape all along.

So much for the sparkly world.

There’s a shine you neglected. You forgot the stars. You forgot the whispers in the dark that make you lose the burden of a bad life. You can just be sorry. You can lose yourself in the stars. Can’t you?

Oh, dance to the music of reality under the bright, moonlit sky. It’s the dance you wish you danced in the day. But hey, you need to escape.

But yes, you can do that all night. Or this.

All night.

All your life.

Your sad, miserable, hopeless life. The better life. The life on the dance floor. The dance floor of life.

And the songs forget to tell us that when the hangover is done with, we have much more miserable states to go through which hurt more than physical pain. It’s in the mind. Yes, do it all night, all through life.
